How to Start a New Life, or a New Year for that Matter

When exploring ways of how to start a new life, it is worth researching what has you in the position of researching how to start a new life in the first place. It wouldn’t make sense to start a new life if what thwarted your success the last time is still in place when you begin anew. If what derailed you remains, it’s likely you’ll be here again very soon exploring how to start a new life again. Some of what has you starting over will be obvious, some not so much. The objective is to bring these destructive forces into your consciousness. By revealing these forces and how they impact your life and performance, they will wane and become little more than nuisances over which you will have control. Awareness is power.

The new plan you lay out for your life will be more effective if you first clear out the junk. For example, if you were going to turn your attic into a guest bedroom, wouldn’t it make sense to remove the old boxes and junk, and then dust and sweep prior to moving in the new bedroom furniture? This is just like that. This is how to start a new life… out with the old before you insert the new.

Over the years I have been able to identify six toxins that will almost assuredly limit, if not destroy, your success. When they are present, success is virtually impossible. What makes these toxins so dangerous is that they can act and work like radon gas. If you don’t know, radon gas is silent, odorless, invisible, and it kills. These six toxins can take your success in precisely the same way radon can take a life. In contemplating how to start a new life you will first want to eliminate the six toxins that kill success.

Toxin #1: Violating the Law of Being

The natural order of success and achievement, or life in general for that matter, is:

BE – DO – HAVE

The law states that by focusing solely on “being” the person you desire to be, you will be compelled to “do” what that person would do, resulting in what that person would “have.” Implementing this law is easier said than done, however. The vast majority of our world’s population, even the people who are familiar with this law, unknowingly violate it countless times per day. Disregarding this one law is literally the equivalent to swimming upstream, running against the wind or riding a bike up a hill. If life is treating you unfairly or is doling out tough lesson after tough lesson, if it feels like the world is against you, stop and look at who you are being.

Toxin #2: Your Thinking

When I refer to your thinking as a toxin, I am speaking of negative thinking and your current thinking (even if it is positive). The thinking that got you here will not get you there. Surely, you have heard Einstein’s definition of insanity. It reads, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” You can easily swap out the word “doing” with “thinking” and the quote’s logic would be just as sound.

The mind is a fascinating mechanism. When working in a certain way, it will propel you toward and manifest whatever you desire. But the same mind functioning in a different way can produce cataclysmic failure. It all begins with your thoughts:

Bad thoughts = bad results, good thoughts = good results, and great thoughts = great results. Is it really that simple? Yes. You become what you think about most of the time.

The technique I use to keep my mind filled with positive and productive thoughts during times of stress, worry or anger is I command myself to STOP focusing on what is happening, and START focusing on what I want to have happen. It works for me every time. Actually, it’s a great first step to start a new life.

Toxin #3: Guilt

Often it is not the repercussions of wrongdoing that will cause a business to fail, a criminal to be apprehended, or a relationship to end; it is the actions of a guilty conscience. A guilty conscience will cause self-imposed worry, fear, loss of composure, erratic thinking, interrupted concentration, and additional actions that will contribute to and prolong the feeling of guilt, all leading to sub-par performance.

Guilt will obstruct your thought process. When your mind is processing thoughts like “Will I get caught? What if they find out? Will I get away with it?” how can any healthy-minded person think straight with such a paranoid and frantic emotion present? There is a saying that when emotions rise, intelligence falls.

A guilt-free life is simple. Operate with honesty and integrity every day of your life and guilt will not be a problem as you start a new life.

Toxin #4: Indecision

Indecision has cost the American government, American businesses, and the American people billions of dollars more than the wrong decision. In other words, NOT making a decision can be more costly than making one, even if it is the wrong one.

Decision causes movement, and nothing happens without a decision. The danger with “nothing happening” is you are unknowingly moving backwards. You are not just standing still while waiting to make the right decision, you are moving backwards because life continues to move forward. Be decisive or your new life will pass you by.

Toxin #5: Fear

Fear within a civilized society is primarily false evidence within the mind that has been created by the mind and then projected into reality and into one’s future. When this takes place, people get stopped dead in their tracks and live unfulfilling lives of boundaries and limits. A life of limits is a life of restrictions on achievement, and that is precisely how fear keeps us from realizing our goals. Fear is likely present as you decide how to start a new life.

The good news is there isn’t anything to fear but fear itself. To eliminate fear, first, practice an attitude of gratitude. It is impossible for gratitude and fear to simultaneously exist. Be grateful. Second, get into action. Fear is easily managed by taking action. Action quickly builds confidence. Conversely, inaction will increase fear and destroy confidence. On a daily basis do that thing you fear most, and do it first, and fear will disappear.

Toxin #6: Environment and People

The way you think, your attitude, the size of your dreams and goals, and your very personality will be shaped, if not completely altered, by your environment. You are a product of your environment, and you will become a product of the environment you create. If you create an environment of losers, you will lose. If you create an environment of achievers, you will achieve. The bright side is YOU get to create your environment.

Eliminate these six toxins as you decide how to start a new life and your new life is certain to unfold with greater ease and speed.
