David and Goliath 2010 : Sales Results

Just a quick post to keep you up to date with my progress of Operation Do Over the Bayou. I find myself these days frequently feeling like the little boy in the picture. What initially seemed like a rather simple endeavor is showing up to be much more difficult than I had expected. It’s becoming clear that selling 200,000 copies of Do Over at $1 each is not going to happen in the time-frame that I had hoped.

Do Over Tip: It’s not failure, it’s feedback.

I overestimated the draw of attaching the promotion of my book to my Rebuild the Bayou cause. I’ve received a lot of “at-a-boys” and “good-for-yous,” however… very few of those encouraging remarks were accompanied by a $1 purchase.

I completely underestimated the value of promoting Do Over’s contents. Further, the inconvenience of pulling out a credit card for a $1 purchase has been a consistent comment. The perception thus far seems to be this is more of a “charity case,” or “social project,” and one that’s outdated.

“Hurricane Katrina hit 5 years ago!” I continue to hear.

“That’s the point!” If you were to visit the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans today you might think that the Hurricane hit just last week. There’s so much to do. It’s America’s biggest forgotten cause of this century. It’s important.

Also, “How good could this book, Do Over, possibly be if it’s only $1?” is another sentiment I suspect people are pondering.

I’m writing this on the 235th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, and we are trained to improvise, adapt and overcome. I will.

My “friends and family” list has been exhausted. So, it’s now time to reach out and market to “general public.” You’ll see by the sales results below that something must change. In result, my marketing and sales strategies are undergoing major changes. I’m putting in place a solid Internet business structure for sales support. Once established (and I’m almost there), my focus will shift to public appearances via workshops, seminars, radio and T.V.

In the last two weeks…

  • I increased the eBook and audio book price to $14.95… the paperback remains $19.95.
  • I launched my iTunes Podcast, YOUR Do Over, and published the second episode today. It’s free, and you can download to your mp3 player of choice through iTunes here. What’s a podcast and why should I care?
  • I am creating 50 mini-web sites (of which 5 are done) like this one here that when they are all complete it will generate 1,000,000 impressions per month for my primary website (the one you are currently reading).
  • I re-designed the book’s sales page of which you can see here.

In the works…

  • Free audio recording of 3 Things You Can Do Today to Accelerate Your Do Over
  • One year Do Over Tip subscription
  • Free Do Over Workshop
  • Mastermind Weekend Summit
  • Joint Venture Internet Marketing Relationships
  • Corporate Sales

Do Over Tip: Waiting for the perfect circumstances in life will not lead to greatness, it’s what we do with our current circumstances that will.

I’m learning a lot as I go. I don’t know it all, and I don’t profess to. If you have any ideas or comments that may help me move forward faster, I’m open. Specifically, I’m looking for personal introductions to people of influence (i.e. CEOs, TV and Radio Personalities, Seasoned Internet Marketers, Reporters, Writers, Bloggers, etc…). Please leave your comments and suggestions below, just after the results. Thanks for your support, I’m very grateful.
