How to Get What They Got

The time-honored definition of insanity “If you always do what you you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got” has been referenced countless times in countless arenas for countless reasons. The fact that this definition of insanity has been over-used and abused doesn’t make it any less valid, however. The logic is simple, and it’s inarguable.

If you want to be a doctor, you have to do what a doctor did to become one. Go to med school. If you want to be a pilot, you have to do what a pilot did to become one. Take flying lessons. If you want to be rich, you have to do what rich people do. Dream, believe and take massive action in support of your dreams.

Those are obvious examples, but what’s not so obvious is the very thing that prevents most people from getting what they want. Not only do you have to do what they did, you also have to…

How to get what they gotThe time-honored definition of insanity “If you always do what you you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got” has been referenced countless times in countless arenas for countless reasons.

Not only do you have to do what they did, you also have to stop doing what they don’t do.

To become a doctor you will indeed have to go to med school. Additionally, you’ll have to make some serious sacrifices. There will be less time for watching T.V., there will be less time to hang with friends and there will be less time for sleep… among countless other things. The same is true to become a pilot. Indeed you will have to take flying lessons, but you’ll also have to stop doing certain things. Limiting, or completely eliminating, the use of recreational substances comes to mind.

If money is your pursuit and becoming rich is an aspiration of yours, you’ll have to dream, believe in that dream, and take massive action inside of a plan that supports that dream; And here, too, you’ll have to stop participating in certain things. For starters, you’ll have to stop talking like a poor person (i.e. “How much will this cost me?” vs. “How much will this make me?” or “I can’t afford that” vs. “How can I afford that?”). You’ll have to stop spending your money like a poor person (i.e. Assets vs. Liabilities).

Regardless of what it is that you want, one of the quickest methods of getting it is to first, find someone who already has it; second, note what they did to get it and then do it; and third, observe what they are not doing that you are doing… and STOP doing it.

If you continue to do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten. Do what they do and stop doing what they don’t do is how to get what they got.
