What to Do When Your Goals Aren’t Getting Any Closer

I know the feeling! You’ve defined your “Why?”, you’ve created a plan, you’re working the plan and every time you stop to check your progress it seems that there hasn’t been any. You’ve read the books, you’ve attended the seminars, you’ve bought the gadgets, you’ve listened to the CDs, you’ve watched the DVDs, you completed the workbooks, you’ve… uh… err… read the blogs, you’ve prayed to your God, you’ve chanted your incantations, you’ve asked the Universe for help and you even resulted to practicing the Law of Attraction, and what do you have to show for it?

Certainly, you’ve traveled some distance in the pursuits of your dreams and goals. You’ve gathered some experience and wisdom along the way. You probably have enough knowledge within you to conduct your own self-help seminar, but are you any closer to YOUR goals?

Don’t get too discouraged. If you’re like most, you’re probably not any closer to the achievement of your goals, either. How am I doing?

I know all of this, because I’ve been there. It was a vicious cycle searching for the answer. Not until I started creating professional partnerships, connecting with mentors, following leaders and hiring coaches did my results start to appear. Not until then did I start moving closer and closer to my goals.

Long way to goI know the feeling! You’ve defined your “Why?”, you’ve created a plan, you’re working the plan and every time you stop to check your progress it seems that there hasn’t been any. Not until I started creating professional partnerships, connecting with mentors, following leaders and hiring coaches did my results start to appear. Not until then did I start moving closer and closer to my goals.

If you aren’t getting any closer to your goals, is it because you’re going at it all alone?

The “go it alone” approach is one of the biggest mistakes I ever made, and I made that mistake for almost 15 consecutive years in the music business. It’s sort of like holding yourself back in some odd demented attempt to defend your pride.

Unfortunately, our society has created an illusion of nobility around being “self-made.” Independence is a silly proud claim for many people, for people that have yet to make it, that is.

I challenge you to find a “self-made” person that doesn’t have at least one relationship (they likely have several) they give credit to for making all the difference in their success. The reality is, nobody makes it on their own. Nobody is “self-made.” If you’re holding on to a sense of pride in pursuing your dreams on your own, stop it. Unless, of course, keeping your pride in tact is more important than the dream itself. If that’s the case, knock yourself out.

If your dream is more important than your pride, however, here’s what I recommend… get a mentor or coach, hire one if you must. There is a Buddhist proverb that says, “When the student is ready, the master appears.” Do not wait for the master to appear – seek the master out. Now! There are very few things that will contribute more to your success than a good coach.

Seek one out, preferably, one that has accomplished something on the level of what you want to accomplish. There is a modicum of truth to the ol’ axiom, “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.”

If you are stuck in some area of your life, fed up and ready to start making some progress, I would love to talk to you about being your coach. Maybe I’m the right person for you, maybe I’m not. A quick conversation typically reveals that right away. Either way, if you want to achieve something you’ve never achieved before, you’ll have to do something you’ve never done before. You already know what doesn’t work, it’s time to do what does… get a coach, a good one. Click here for some more information.
